THEFT FROM A MOTOR VEHICLE -- A 900-watt amplifier and two 12-inch speakers belonging to Kate A. Andrews were taken from a vehicle parked at 437 S. 10th between midnight Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday; $1,100 loss.




KBI, police officers testify at battery trial

The trial is set to resume Monday in Saline County District Court with the defense presenting its evidence.

Weis, 25, of Brookville, is accused of one count of intentional aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, two counts of aggravated battery causing bodily harm and one count of criminal use of a weapon in a confrontation that occurred July 13, 2008, in the 800 block of Sherman Street.

Southeast, Ell-Saline to consider joining schools group

The Salina School District was one of the founding members of Schools for Fair Funding more than a decade ago. Monday night, two other school districts in Saline County will consider joining the group, as well.




Trash pickup as scheduled on Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, Wednesday, the city's Sanitation Division will run regularly scheduled trash collection routes. The city landfill will also be open during regularly scheduled hours from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility will not be open.

Schools recognized with achievement awards

Several schools across north-central and northwest Kansas have been recognized for their students' performance on the state assessment tests this past spring.

The fourth annual Governor's Achievement Awards were announced Friday by the Kansas Department of Education. To qualify, a school must have made "adequate yearly progress" in both reading and math and met the "standard of excellence" on the state tests. Schools must also have ranked in the top 5 percent on the tests.

Tax waivers granted to a multibillion-dollar Canadian energy company for a crude oil pipeline that will run through the state will cost local governments almost three times as much in lost property tax revenue than previously believed.
