Beloit juvenile facility closing

By the Salina Journal

BELOIT -- As part of the state's budget-cutting measures, the Beloit Juvenile Correctional Facility is being closed and youths are being transferred to the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex in Topeka.

All of the youths are to be transferred by Aug. 28, according to a news release issued Thursday by the Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority.

The closure will affect about 47 staff members at Beloit, according to the news release; about 20 staff members will be added at Topeka to accommodate the female population at that facility.

Two of the housing units which previously had been used on the west campus of the Topeka complex are being reopened and refurbished to accommodate the 22 or so young women who will be transferred from Beloit.

A secure barrier fence will be installed between the men on the east campus and the women on the west campus, according to the news release.

Although the two operations will share administrative, food, program, health, education and maintenance services, the girls will reside in facilities completely segregated from the males, with independent residential buildings, classrooms, dining and visitation facilities, according to the news release.

The budget for the Beloit facility for fiscal 2010 is $3,111,534. By suspending operations at Beloit, that budget will be reduced by $1,466,131. Of that, $719,360 will be transferred for the increased cost of operations at the Topeka facility.

The remainder will be spent on operating expenditures for July and August and minimal maintenance and operating costs for the remainder of the fiscal year.

Beloit Is Moving... says....
I never thought that BJCF would be moved to Topeka. This comes as a surprise to me.
