Several schools across north-central and northwest Kansas have been recognized for their students' performance on the state assessment tests this past spring.
The fourth annual Governor's Achievement Awards were announced Friday by the Kansas Department of Education. To qualify, a school must have made "adequate yearly progress" in both reading and math and met the "standard of excellence" on the state tests. Schools must also have ranked in the top 5 percent on the tests.
The Clifton-Clyde School District had its elementary school, middle school and high school on the list; Superintendent Brian Pekarek said the elementary school placed first in the state and the middle school placed second in the state. Clifton-Clyde High School was ranked 14th in the state.

n Lakeside Elementary School, Waconda
n Lakeside Intermediate School, Waconda
n Phillipsburg Elementary School, Phillipsburg
n Smith Center Elementary School, Smith Center
n St. John's Elementary School, Beloit
n Tipton Community School, Tipton
n Kennedy Middle School, Hays
n Lakeside Junior High, Waconda
n Oakley Middle School, Oakley
n Thunder Ridge Middle School, Agra
n Claflin Junior-Senior High, Claflin
n Weskan High School, Weskan
n Wilson Junior-Senior High, Wilson.

hummm... looks like there is a significant difference between the amount of money awarded by the state to rural schools in comparison to schools with larger enrollments...
