Injured baby remains hospitalized

A 5-month-old Salina boy who allegedly was injured while in the care of his child care provider is no longer on a respirator but remains sedated in a Wichita hospital, his mother said Friday.

Malik Shackelford is breathing on his own, but he suffered seizures Thursday evening and Wesley Medical Center staff administered medication to stop the seizures that also keeps him in a deep sleep, said Mary "Rachel" Shackelford.

The baby was not responsive Tuesday morning when his child care provider called 911, according to police. Amanda E. Castro, 29, the child care provider, was arrested later that afternoon on charges of aggravated battery and abuse of a child.

A spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Castro voluntarily surrendered her child care provider license.
