Thief able to get past cars' keypad entry systems

Thief able to bypass cars' keypad entries

Salina police are investigating how someone has been able to get into and steal items from vehicles equipped with keypad entry systems.

Salina Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield said police have received nearly a dozen reports in which a thief was able to defeat a car's keypad entry system and take valuables. He said all of the vehicles involved were from the Ford/Lincoln/Mercury line of cars.

He recommends not leaving valuables in the car, especially if the items are visible from the outside of the vehicle.

In the most recent case, an orange canvas purse, prescription eyeglasses and cash were removed from a locked vehicle belonging to LaVaun E. Sherman while the car was parked at 1201 Markley between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Monday. Total loss was estimated at $808.

The other cases involving thefts from cars reported to be locked that had keypad entry systems occurred June 5 in the Walmart parking lot; June 11 at the YMCA and 901 Twin Oaks; June 13 at 341 Center; June 16 at Bill Burke Park; June 20 on two vehicles at Central Mall; June 25 at the Salina Country Club; and June 29 at the Bicentennial Center, according to Salina Police Department records.
