School board to discuss summer programs

2/9/2010

Salina School Board members will discuss reducing summer school programs at a meeting at 5 p.m. today at the district office, 1511 Gypsum.

Because of budget cuts, the board back in January discussed a number of reductions in programs and staff, including to summer school programs.

At tonight's meeting, the board will take action on a series of specific recommendations, including;

n Reducing elementary summer school from six weeks to five;

n Cutting 30 minutes each from the elementary summer reading and math programs;

n Eliminating a mid-morning bus route for elementary summer school;

n Reducing pay for summer-school teachers, reflecting the shorter program.

The board is also scheduled to discuss a proposal from Whispering Cottonwood Farm Educational Center, to establish garden plots at several schools. Because of the cost, and student time needed, administrators are recommending against the proposal.
