Ell-Saline revved for state return
EMPORIA -- Call it what you want. A chance for redemption. An opportunity to put last year behind them. Or maybe sending notice to other Class 2-1A softball teams about what lies ahead.
Ell-Saline hopes to do all of that and more this weekend when it returns to the 2-1A state tournament at Trusler Sports Complex. Tops on the Cardinals' wish list will be bringing home the first state title in the program's history.
Ell-Saline (22-1) is the tournament's No. 2 seed as it faces Chetopa (17-5) in today's 5 p.m. opener. The Cardinals are back at state after placing fourth in Emporia a year ago.

Playing the Hits: Sacred Heart, Ell-Saline softball teams combine for 30 runs, split
BROOKVILLE -- Brittany Clancy did about everything she could at the plate to help her Ell-Saline softball team during Thursday's games with Sacred Heart.
Then it was Clancy's diving catch in right field that finally ended the marathon doubleheader nearly four hours after the first pitch was thrown.
The county rivals split their non-league twinbill at the Ell-Saline High School diamond, with Sacred Heart building a seven-run lead in the opener before holding on for an 8-7 victory. It was Ell-Saline that got out quickly in the second contest and never let the Knights catch up in a 9-6 Cardinal victory.
