Knight Moves! Sacred Heart boys pile up points for Class 3A track victory
WICHITA -- Now that it's over, Sacred Heart's boys can come clean.
"Our coaches said we shouldn't be counting points, but of course we have," Drew Diederich said with a smile after the Knights rolled to a first-place Class 3A team finish Saturday at the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships at Cessna Stadium. "Before the 800, we figured things would have to go pretty bad not to win it."
By the time they put the final exclamation point on it with a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay, the Knights had amassed 73 points to 48 for runner-up Phillipsburg.

Swanson closes out career with state title; Central senior wins 5A pole vault
WICHITA -- Never mind the state record or even her own personal best.
Only one goal really mattered to Salina Central's Taylor Swanson in the Class 5A pole vault competition, and when Mill Valley's Emily Brigham brought the bar down on her third attempt at 12 feet it was time to celebrate.
"I've dreamed of being a state champion since my freshman year, so I'm very, very excited," Swanson said after scoring the upset Friday on the first day of the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships at Cessna Stadium. "I just kept telling myself not to count myself out."

Goal Oriented
WICHITA -- Drew Diederich was not yet born the last time it happened.
Neither were any of his Sacred Heart teammates.
And yet as the Knights set their sights on the school's first boys team title in 26 years this weekend at the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships, the focus is much narrower.
State title eludes South junior in 19 holes
LAWRENCE - If more opportunities like this come Ben Hargrave’s way - and his head coach is positive they will - then the Salina South junior can draw from the experience he gained in his 19 holes at Alvamar Golf Course.
But early Monday evening, nearly seven hours after he hit his first tee shot at the Class 5A boys state championship, Hargrave could find little positive from his runner-up finish to Wichita Kapaun’s Sam Stevens.
Hargrave appeared to be in control when he made the turn at 2-under, birdied two of the first four holes on the back nine and had his round at 4-under with four holes to play.
Salina Central repeat state boys golf qualifier
LAWRENCE -- A return trip to state was never a given. Not after Salina Central lost its top two players from last year's state qualifying team and had only one senior among its top six this season.
Now that the Mustangs have played their way back to the Class 5A boys state golf tournament, head coach Patrick Newell isn't exactly sure what to expect.
No Average Jones: South sprinter shines at 5A regional
Michael Jones had waited all season for this day.
Yes, setting personal best on the way to a sprint sweep was nice, but what really had him smiling was the 400-meter relay.
"I'm really happy about that," Jones said after teaming with Michael Gier, Christian Linenberger and Marcus Cutler to tie the school record in the Class 5A track and field regional at Salina Stadium. "Today it felt like our 4-by-100 team came together finally.
